Well, that's better than the only other suggestion I've heard so far: voles. The weird thing is that they're in a high traffic area with hard packed dirt - right at the head of the driveway, near the bottom step of the porch, between the house and the kennel. We (and the dogs) walk there all the time. I'd think no matter what manner of creature it is, they'd be better off and have easier digging in a less popular area.
